Breast Reconstruction

Breast ReconstructionModern surgical techniques makes it possible to reconstruct a natural-looking breast after a partial or complete mastectomy (breast removal) for cancer or other diseases. The procedure can be performed immediately following mastectomy, so that the patient awakens with a new breast. Alternatively, reconstruction may begin years after mastectomy. There are several ways to reconstruct the breast, including techniques using implants and the patient’s own tissues.  The decision on which option to choose should be based not only on your needs and expectations, but also guided by the experience of your surgeon.

DIEP flap breast reconstruction, the most recent and advanced technique, is offered by Dr. Karl Schwarz. He performs breast reconstruction at McGill University Health Center.

Most importantly, breast reconstruction does not affect the recurrence of cancer, does not cause any other diseases, and does not affect chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
